HARTVILLE/LAKE Gateway Marker Project Announced

Published on 12/6/2024

The Lake Township Chamber of Commerce and HARTVILLE/LAKE Community Development (HLCD) are thrilled to announce the design and creation of Gateway Markers as part of the ongoing West Maple Corridor Revitalization Project. The overall purpose of the West Maple Revitalization project, released in 2022, is to beautify and connect the community along West Maple Street from Historic Downtown Hartville to the roundabout at the Hartville Hardware, Kitchen, MarketPlace & Flea Market. Gateway Markers will help tell the story and express the identity of the West Maple Corridor at key thresholds into and out of the community.

The Hartville/Lake Gateway Marker Project includes two (2) distinct gateway markers, each strategically located to welcome visitors and locals alike into and out of the West Maple Corridor:

Eastern Gateway
: The square of Historic Downtown Hartville at 110 North Prospect is a prominent place where vehicles and pedestrians travel through the Village of Hartville.

Western Gateway:
The roundabout at the Hartville Hardware, Kitchen, MarketPlace & Flea Market which is a key entry point for those traveling to our regional retail destination.

These Gateway Markers will not only enhance the West Maple Corridor’s revitalization but will also serve as enduring symbols of community pride by creating inviting and visually meaningful spaces.

Eastern Gateway: Heritage Gateway Marker

The first phase of this project is the design and creation of a gateway marker in the heart of Historic Downtown Hartville at 110 North Prospect. More than just a gateway, this location is an opportunity to make the square a more inviting and memorable place.

The concept for and design of the Heritage Gateway Marker has been done in collaboration with Rothschild Doyno Collaborative,  Each+Every, Tanya McInerney Landscape Design, and Jonathan Paul Fleming, architect.

Funding for the Heritage Gateway Marker has been raised through a tourism grant from Visit Canton/Explore Stark, and generous donations from the Hartville Area Community Charitable Trust Fund at Stark Community Foundation, as well as the Village of Hartville. This Heritage Gateway Marker will be completed by the end of 2025.

“The Gateway Marker Project will symbolize a connection between the past, present, and future while welcoming all who travel through our unique West Maple Corridor,” said Chip Weisel, president of the Lake Chamber. “The Heritage Gateway Marker, in particular, will transform an underutilized downtown space into a meaningful landmark.”

Plans have also begun and discussions with ODOT are underway to design and create a gateway marker in the roundabout at the Hartville Hardware, Kitchen, MarketPlace & Flea Market

If you would like to be part of supporting the Hartville/Lake Gateway Marker Project, HLCD is now selling commemorative engraved pavers that will surround the Heritage Gateway Marker in downtown Hartville. The pavers can be personalized with names, organization titles, or meaningful messages, offering a lasting tribute to families, businesses, or loved ones. Proceeds will go to help fund the construction of the gateway markers.

Purchase Commemorative Pavers for family members, friends, or businesses.

We invite everyone in the community to take part in creating something truly special that will stand for generations by purchasing an engraved commemorative paver.
